Graduate Students

Danny Dabroy, BPH

Danny was born and raised in Garland, Tx. He is currently pursuing a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree with a concentration of epidemiology at the University of Texas at Arlington. He has an interest in nicotine/ tobacco research and an interest in medicine. Danny joined the Nicotine and Tobacco Research Lab in January 2019 as an undergraduate, following a 6 year career in the U.S. Air Force. He has had the opportunity to present the lab’s research findings in multiple research events such as the annual American Public Health Association (APHA) and Research Beyond Boundaries. He plans to pursue medical school after graduating with his MPH degree.

Steven Barrientos, BSN, RN

Steven is currently a student in the Master of Public Health program at The University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) with a concentration in Epidemiology. He graduated from UTA in 2021 with a bachelor’s degree in Nursing and currently holds a Registered Nurse (RN) license with the Texas BON. Steven is also BLS certified from The American Heart Association and has been recognized on the UTA Dean’s List with Distinction several times. He has worked with several hospitals in the DFW area administering vaccines, registering clients, and monitoring for post-vaccine symptoms at various COVID-19 vaccination sites. Steven joined the Nicotine and Tobacco Research Lab in 2022, applying his clinical and medical expertise to the research field. He has a passion for the investigation of infectious diseases and hopes to aid in lessening the burden among global populations. He plans to pursue a career in global health while implementing aspects of his nursing background. 


Collaborators

Mohammad Ebrahimi Kalan, PhD, MS

Dr. Mohammad Ebrahimi Kalan is an Assistant Professor of Epidemiology at Eastern Virginia Medical School.  He is an epidemiologist committed to reducing health disparities driven by commercial tobacco use. Dr. Kalan’s research spans a continuum from analyses of extensive epidemiologic surveys to clinical studies and community research. The program of his research centers around understanding health disparities in tobacco product use, designing and evaluating policies and health communication, and understanding how such policies may affect priority populations, including people of color, adolescents and young adults, and people with mental health conditions. Dr. Kalan is the Chair of the SRNT Outreach Subcommittee. He also conducts national and global tobacco control research to help prevent tobacco use and ultimately reduce the global burden of tobacco-induced non-communicable diseases (e.g. Cancer)


Alumni

Farjana Yesmin, MPH

Farjana graduated from Brac University, Bangladesh in 2019 with a Bachelor of Pharmacy degree. She is currently pursuing her master’s in public health in the University of Texas at Arlington. Farjana joined the Nicotine and Tobacco Research Lab in January 2021 to gain hands-on experience in the research field. In the lab, she investigates the health effects associated with emerging tobacco products and compares them to non-tobacco exposure. Her interests include clinical research, statistical analysis, and clinical trials.
